Money, money, money

by Lorie Marsh on January 21, 2010

We’re fully three weeks into 2010, and I have eight more weeks to raise $375,000 to shoot Lost in Sunshine (LIS) by our target production period of late April through most of May, and pay for its post-production.  And, that’s not the final sum of money I still need to raise for the whole life span of the project; it’s what I need to get the movie “in the can” and edited.

Deep breath.

So, what am I doing about it?

  • We’re getting closer to formally attaching our two lead actors.  With leads attached, I hope to gain some traction to get out of the Catch 22 of No Cast/No Money, No Money/No Cast.  Our fabulous lead actress-to-be has been on board verbally for the past year, based on the strength of the script and its compelling female lead role.  I’m now about to work with our Casting Director to begin approaching actors for the male lead, based on the same factors.
  • We have two new promising leads on potential equity investors, one of which came about only in the last ten days (it sure helps to find out that you know people who know people who are worth hundreds of millions of dollars – yow).

I’m totally cool with being surprised by the Universe with connections, resources, and opportunities I could not have foretold!  More, please!  But, I also want to keep the ball rolling.

  • Today, I phoned in to a virtual seminar on sales presentations with independent producer, Suzanne Lyons, presented by FilmSpecific.   It fired me up!  Between this seminar and some feedback from the marketing/distribution advisers we’ve hired for LIS, I’m now fully percolating plans to devise and orchestrate two or three Sales Presentation meetings over the next six weeks.  We’ll definitely put together a meeting in Texas; and, I need to stew a little while to determine where else…?  California?  Minnesota (where I reside)?  I’m also contemplating how we might simulcast our Texas presentation via Skype, or some other means of video-conferencing, to remote-viewing potential investors while we conduct it.

All this and more; my toddler is learning how to use the toilet.

Coming in early February, a new Meet The Producer… posting with producer, Karin Chien!
